中国极地研究中心是我国唯一专门从事极地考察的科学研究和保障业务中心，也是我国极地科学的研究中心，“国家海洋局极地科学重点实验室”的依托单位，主要开展极地雪冰-海洋与全球变化、极区电离层-磁层耦合与空间天气、极地生态环境及其生命过程以及极地科学基础平台技术等领域的研究；建有极地雪冰与全球变化实验室、电离层物理实验室、极光和磁层物理实验室、极地生物分析实验室、微生物与分子生物学分析实验室、生化分析实验室、极地微生物菌种保藏库和船载实验室等实验分析设施；在南极长城站、中山站建有国家野外科学观测研究站，是开展南极雪冰和空间环境研究的重要依托平台。
中国极地研究中心作为我国极地考察的业务中心，以及我国极地科学的信息中心，负责“雪龙”号极地科学考察船、南极长城站、中山站以及国内基地的运行与管理；负责中国南北极考察队的后勤保障工作；开展极地考察条件保障的国际交流与合作；负责中国极地科学数据库、极地信息网络、极地档案馆、极地图书馆、样品样本库的建设与管理并提供公益服务；负责出版《极地研究》中英文杂志；负责进行国际极地信息交流与合作；负责极地博物馆、极地科普馆的建设和管理。
